Yes, We Can - Delay, Disrupt, and Obstruct to Defend Democracy from the GOP Coup

New York Democrats take a page out of the Republican playbook and give D.C. Dems a lesson in what must be done

Currently, Republicans hold a narrow three-vote majority in the House, the smallest margin since the Great Depression. When the convicted-felon (so-called) president appointed Rep. Elise Stefanik as U.N. Ambassador, he left her seat vacant, triggering a special election. Citing budget concerns, New York Democrats are advocating to postpone this special election until November.

If they succeed, New York Democrats would further weaken the already fragile Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives and send a strong message to Democratic leaders in Washington to utilize every strategy available to delay and counteract the Republicans, who are actively and openly trying to remold American democracy into a “serfs and lords” system, the founders fought a revolution to escape.

Obstruct the Oligarchy

Republicans control the House by a razor-thin majority. Nevertheless, they’ve proclaimed a "mandate”. Like the fiction that their serial bankrupt, tax-cheating convicted felon standard bearer is a “successful businessman,” they know they lack the widespread support necessary to transform democracy into oligarchy, but they’re attempting it anyway.

Democrats must recognize the time for modeling good behavior, hoping the Republicans follow suit is past. Republicans have had no interest bipartisan compromise, much less governing, for decades.

The only thing on the Democratic agenda should be throwing as much sand in the gears as they can, to slow down this Republican blitzkrieg against democracy before it becomes irreversible.

What Would Republicans Do?

Obstructionism is not a new tactic in American politics. While both parties have employed strategies to delay or derail the opposition’s agenda, the Republicans have turned it into their standard operating procedure.

During the Obama years - when the President actually had a mandate - Republicans conspired to obstruct every attempt to save the American people from the sufferings of a near second Republican Great Depression in 100 years, causing more pain and harm for political gain.

The pattern is clear to anyone not afraid to face it - Republicans choose power, no matter what. Even at the expense of harming the people they’re supposed to represent. Now, they’re choosing power over democracy itself.

As long as Yale-educated JD Vance pretends to not know that our government consists of three, co-equal branches in which the President is not a king, and unelected South African billionaire sociopath runs rampant through our system like a parasite destroying its host, there should be no Democratic votes - for anything.

If Tommy Tuberville can obstruct over 400 military promotions for over 10 months because he doesn’t like it when women are free to not bleed out in hospital parking lots, the very least Democrats can do is all they can to stop the slide into permanent autocracy.

In this engaging commentary, Tara Devlin from Tarabuster tackles actions taken by New York lawmakers to deny House Republicans a key vote, effectively reducing their power and challenging their claims of a mandate. With the GOP's agenda threatening the very foundation of our democracy, Tara argues that it's time for Democrats to unite in resistance and obstruct every measure put forth by this unfit administration.

Join Tara as she breaks down the necessity of total obstruction and emphasizes the importance of standing firm against the Republican coup against the grand experiment of liberal democracy.
