It’s often said that a nation’s budget is a statement of morals. If that’s the case, then judging by this repugnant bill the Republicans call “beautiful,” it’s safe to say that Republicans have none.
The "One Big Beautiful Bill" passed by House Republicans is a horror show only a bunch of demons cosplaying as Christians could stomach, much less celebrate.
Tara Devlin from Tarabuster and the Tara Show (co-hosted with Tara Dublin) breaks it down—how it harms ordinary Americans and enriches the rich by showering substantial benefits on wealthy and large corporations.
For your convenience, here’s the breakdown:
1. Permanent Extension of 2017 Trump Tax Cuts
What it does: Makes permanent the tax cuts from 2017, which were set to expire.
Who benefits: The wealthiest Americans, especially the top 0.1% (average tax cut: nearly $300,000/year).
Who gets hurt: Increases the deficit and reduces resources for public services, while providing little to no benefit for low- and middle-income households.
Impact: By 2033, the lowest-income households will be 4% worse off, while the richest 10% will be 2% better off.
2. Expansion of Pass-Through Business Deduction
What it does: Increases the deduction for pass-through business income from 20% to 23% and makes it permanent.
Who benefits: Business owners, especially wealthy individuals with large business incomes; costs over $700 billion over a decade.
Who gets hurt: Skews the tax code further in favor of the rich, increasing inequality.
3. Temporary No Tax on Tips and Overtime
What it does: Temporarily exempts tips and overtime pay from income tax through 2028.
Who benefits: A small fraction of workers in tipped industries; the provision is temporary and complicated.
Who gets hurt: Most working-class Americans see little benefit; the provision is costly ($300 billion over four years) and could worsen the deficit.
4. Auto Loan Interest Deduction
What it does: Allows up to $10,000 in interest on auto loans for U.S.-assembled cars to be deducted through 2029.
Who benefits: Car buyers with large loans, disproportionately those who can afford new vehicles.
Who gets hurt: Adds complexity and cost to the tax code, with little benefit for the poorest Americans.
5. SALT Deduction Cap Increase
What it does: Raises the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap from $10,000 to $40,000 starting in 2025, with phaseouts for high earners.
Who benefits: Wealthier taxpayers in high-tax states; the benefit is less for the middle class.
Who gets hurt: The provision does little for low-income households and reduces federal revenue.
Here’s America’s first convicted felon president promising to restore the SALT deduction while neglecting to apologize (lol, I know) to the Trumpanzee dupes for eliminating it in the first place. What’s that old PT Barnum adage about “suckers born every minute”? Trumpanzees are living proof.
6. Estate and Gift Tax Exemption Expansion
What it does: Raises the estate and gift tax exemption from $10 million to $15 million per individual, indexed for inflation.
Who benefits: The wealthiest families, enabling more tax-free inheritance.
Who gets hurt: Reduces revenue for public services; does nothing for ordinary Americans.
This is all about cultivating an intergenerational aristocracy the likes of which the founders fought a revolution to overthrow.
7. Cuts to Medicaid
What it does: Imposes work requirements for able-bodied adults without children, more frequent eligibility checks, and bans coverage for gender transition services; speeds up implementation to 2026.
Who gets hurt: Millions of low-income Americans risk losing health coverage, including people with disabilities, nursing home residents, and children.
Who benefits: Reduces government spending, freeing resources for tax cuts that favor the wealthy.
8. Cuts and Restrictions to SNAP (Food Stamps)
What it does: Cuts federal funding for SNAP by $267 billion over 10 years; shifts costs to states; raises work requirements to age 64.
Who gets hurt: Over 42 million Americans, especially the poorest, risk losing food assistance; states may reduce benefits or restrict eligibility further.
Who benefits: The savings fund tax breaks for the wealthy.
9. Repeal of Clean Energy Tax Credits
What it does: Ends many Biden-era clean energy incentives, including credits for solar, wind, and electric vehicles.
Who gets hurt: Hurts efforts to combat climate change, increases energy costs for consumers, and slows the transition to clean energy.
Who benefits: Fossil fuel interests and traditional energy companies.
Republicans sure know how to set America up for success, don’t they. As the world continues to evolve without us.
10. Massive Increase in National Debt and Deficit
What it does: Projected to increase the U.S. debt by $5.2 trillion and the annual deficit by $600 billion.
Who gets hurt: Higher debt means higher future interest payments, risking cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and other critical programs; could lead to higher taxes or inflation.
Who benefits: The wealthy benefit from immediate tax cuts, while the long-term costs are borne by everyone else.
11. More Favors to the Wealthy or Special Interests
Immediate Expensing for Businesses: Allows 100% first-year depreciation for certain property, favoring large businesses7.
Expanded Business Interest Deduction: Benefits large corporations and real estate investors.
Elimination of $200 Tax on Gun Silencers: Eases access to gun silencers, a priority for some special interest groups.
Tax on Remittances: Imposes a 3.5% tax on money sent abroad by non-citizens, disproportionately affecting immigrant families1.
12. Cuts to Social Safety Net and Anti-Poverty Programs
What it does: Overall, the bill slashes over $1 trillion from anti-poverty programs, including Medicaid, SNAP, and others.
Who gets hurt: The most vulnerable Americans, including children, seniors, and people with disabilities.
Who benefits: The wealthy and corporations, who receive the bulk of the tax relief.
To sum it up, Republicans’ vile "One Big Beautiful Bill" is nothing but another massive transfer of wealth from the poorest Americans to the richest.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has already scored the bill as "the largest transfer of wealth from poor to rich in a law in U.S. history," leaving millions of Americans worse off while giving the richest more of our money to buy politicians, corrupt government and make sure the game stays rigged in their favor.
Shame on any American who voted to put Trump and his cabal of evil enablers in power. Shame on you all.
