Republicans Just Made More Homeless Veterans
The GOP continues their unbroken record of making life worse for Veterans—and everyone else
As someone who actually wore my country’s uniform, it baffles me why anyone who served would ever vote Republican.
Forget the performative flag pins and the hollow “thank you for your service” platitudes, Republicans never miss an opportunity to pass legislation that makes veterans’ lives worse.
Republicans Repeal Program that Allows Veterans to Keep a Roof Over Their Heads
This week, Republicans continued their unbroken record of harm against Veterans and gutted the popular and successful Veterans Affairs Servicing Purchase (VASP) program, which helped close to 20,000 veterans keep a roof over their heads.
In other words, once again, Republicans used their power to ensure more American veterans will become homeless at the very time that unelected South African billionaire sociopath is dancing around with a chainsaw, cutting every lifeline on orders of Donnie Two Dolls, AKA: the worst president ever.
Yet the draft-dodging con artist—and the party that worships him—has the audacity to claim they “support the troops.” Spare me. The GOP’s idea of “support” is voting against veterans at every turn and then distracting and gaslighting them about DEI and drag queens on every propaganda outlet and Kremlin-funded influencer they can get their hands on.
This latest assault on the dignity of our nation is just another day at the office for the GOP and their draft-dodging standard bearer. Don’t just take my word for it, here’s just some of the receipts.
Here’s Just Some of the Republican Policies that Screw Veterans:
2018: Laying the Groundwork for Privatization
Trump’s first maladministration passed “the Mission Act,” opening the door for veterans to be shuttled out of the VA and into private, for-profit healthcare. The real mission is the only one Republicans ever engage in. Namely, make the rich richer, and veterans the hosts from which privateers suck profit and discard.
I know you’ll be surprised to learn that the only thing the “Mission Act” succeeded in was making care more expensive and ballooning costs from around $15 billion in 2018 to $28.5 billion in 2023.
2022: The PACT Act-Republicans Say No to Sick Veterans
July 2022:
Senate Republicans block the Honoring Our PACT Act, a bill to help veterans exposed to toxic burn pits and chemicals. That’s right-25 Republicans voted to let veterans die of cancer.
August 2022:
After public outrage, the PACT Act finally passes, but not before 11 Republican Senators vote against it. Republicans love billionaires and hate veterans. They were just hoping no one would notice.
2023–2024: Housing and Food-Who Needs It?
March 2024:
House Republicans propose slashing $2.3 billion from affordable housing, homelessness, and community development programs-including those that help veterans. Because nothing says “support” like cutting off help for vets who can’t afford rent.
June 2024:
House Republicans directed the Agriculture Committee to cut $230 billion from programs under its jurisdiction over the next decade, with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program expected to take the largest hit. Jesus-loving Republicans think the expressed instructions of the Savior they pretend to worship is just too “woke”—and their billionaire masters can’t wait much longer for the death of democracy.
Early 2025: The Full-On Assault Commences
February 2025:
Republicans introduce so-called “Veterans’ ACCESS Act” to supposedly “loosen” access to private care. Meaning, more privatization, less accountability, and a weaker VA for everyone.
52 Senate Republicans vote against an amendment to protect PACT Act benefits for toxic-exposed veterans. The message is the same one Republicans have been telling us for years. “Don’t get sick. If you do, die quickly.”
House Republicans pass a bill to rip $22.8 billion from the VA’s Toxic Exposures Fund. If you’re sick from burn pits or Agent Orange, oh well.
The so-called “Default on America Act” claws back $2 billion from veterans’ claims processing, healthcare, research, and education. Meaning, if you’re waiting for benefits, keep waiting.
Republicans block protections for veterans’ funding, leaving benefits on the chopping block while the unelected South African sociopath parasite indiscriminately fires thousands of veterans and cancels contracts for services helping them.
The GOP funding bill allows $4.5 billion in veterans’ medical care funding to be siphoned away from health services and cuts over $1.3 billion from military construction, despite public claims to the contrary.
Senate Republicans block the Protect Veteran Jobs Act, effectively telling veterans fired during Trump and Musk’s vindictive, ideologically driven and needless mass federal layoffs to f-off.
Trump and Musk fire over 6,000 veterans from federal jobs, including at the VA, and plan to fire 80,000 more from agencies already understaffed, making it even harder for veterans to get care. If that’s how Republicans “support the troops,” I shudder to think what they’d do if they were openly trying to harm them.
The Republican funding bill slashes housing vouchers and SNAP benefits that millions of veterans rely on to keep a roof over their heads and food on their tables. Apparently, GOP “personal responsibility” means letting veterans starve in the streets, while the country they served shrugs and looks the other way
March–April 2025: The Kick-Down Continues
March 2025:
Republicans move to kill the VASP program, which helped thousands of veterans avoid foreclosure. More vets sleeping in cars? Apparently, that’s the plan.
April 2025:
House Republicans have moved to repeal rules that protected veterans from scam colleges like Trump University. When they see veterans a bunch of losers and suckers to exploit. After all, grifting Americans is a core GOP value.
Coming Soon:
Don’t worry. Hungry veterans in the richest country on Earth can find comfort in the fact that Donald Jesus Trump will still get his McDonalds Happy Meal and diet Coke at the push of a button.
IOW: No Self-Respecting Veteran Should Vote Republican
Frankly, why anyone, veteran or civilian, votes for a party with an unbroken history of harming those who served is a testament to the power of propaganda.
The GOP has perfected “patriotism” as performative art. The giant flags that their draft-dodging standard bearer likes to sexually assault in before a baying crowd while his cowed sycophants work in the shadows, sacrificing veterans to billionaire greed. All the while, their propaganda networks keep people whipped up over drag queens and other manufactured outrages, making sure no one notices who’s actually picking veterans’ (and everyone else’s) pockets.
But here’s the truth Republicans don’t want you to hear: You cannot claim to be a patriot or to honor veterans while tearing America apart. You don’t get to call yourself “a patriot” while leaving servicemembers to rot in poverty, sickness, or despair.
The GOP’s record isn’t just bad—it’s a betrayal. And every veteran (or civilian) who falls for their “patriotic” cosplay is signing up for a party that sees them as collateral damage in their quest for power.
The message Republicans send to veterans is clear. Trump’s “losers and suckers” line wasn’t just a gaffe. It was a reflection of the GOP’s long-standing mission statement.
How much longer are we going to take it, people? How much longer?
