Sarah Burris from Raw Story was on the show to talk about this so-called “America Party” that Elon Musk just announced. So here’s the deal, Musk, after his big falling out with Donald Trump over that massive tax and spending bill, decided he’s going to launch his own political party. He’s calling it the “America Party,” and he claims it’s all about restoring freedom and breaking up what he calls the “uniparty” system.
Sarah and I, we looked at this with a healthy dose of skepticism. I mean, who’s really going to join this thing? Is it going to be the awkward white dudes, the incels, the libertarians who never quite fit in with the GOP? Maybe it’ll split the Republican base, but Sarah didn’t see a bunch of Democrats jumping ship for Musk’s billionaire vanity project. She made it clear: labor Democrats, the folks who want a real labor party, aren’t going to find what they’re looking for here.
Sarah also pointed out just how hard it is to actually build a third party in this country. You’ve got to go state by state, spend a ton of money, and jump through endless hoops just to get on the ballot. Sure, Musk has the cash, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to crack the two-party system wide open.
We also talked about the bigger picture—how folks like Sam Altman are out there complaining they’re “politically homeless” because Democrats aren’t pro-innovation enough. Sarah wasn’t having it. She said the American dream is slipping away, especially for working people, while billionaires rake in the benefits of tax cuts and automation wipes out jobs for everyone else.
We dug into the consequences of these permanent tax cuts for the rich and cuts to social programs like Medicaid. It’s the most vulnerable—disabled folks, the homeless, low-wage workers, who get hurt the most. And when disasters hit, like the floods in Texas, it’s the same story, cuts to public services make things worse, and then Republicans try to blame Democrats for the mess.
We wrapped up by talking about the threats to due process, the privatization of government, and how the system just isn’t working for ordinary Americans. If we want real change, it’s going to take grassroots action and holding the powerful accountable.
