It is Never About What They Say It’s About
Getting ahead of the lies about Iran
So now we’re at war with Iran. Over the next days and weeks, we are going to hear many different explanations for why this war had to happen. None of them will be honest. For example, here’s a quick quote from the president claiming that we attacked because Iran cannot be allowed to produce a nuclear weapon:
It has always been the policy of the United States, in particular my administration, that this terrorist regime can never have a nuclear weapon. I’ll say it again, they can never have a nuclear weapon.
And here is an image from an article that posted after our last attack on Iran, just a few months ago. It is still up today on the White House website:
So, according to our president, we had to launch a full-scale war that will kill American working-class kids so we can destroy a nuclear program we already destroyed. Someone make it make sense.
And even worse, while our soldiers are entering a battlefield they may never return home from, the same president has decided to address the nation not from the Situation Room or from the White House at all, but from Mar-a-Lago. Yes – he’s running the war from the golf course. Here he is, in his golf gear, telling American parents that their children are in grave danger before he starts the back nine.
Now, Trump’s indifference to suffering is nothing new. In fact, it’s perhaps the thing his supporters like most about him … as long as that suffering happens to whatever group the right labels as “those people” at any given time. But this war will land hardest on the backs of the very working-class families that elected Trump, and this simple truth will be seen as cause for some well-deserved I-told-you-so moments on the left. However, there is a question that needs to be addressed that has nothing at all to do with the Middle East, and everything to do with the assault on democracy here at home.
“Why would Trump do something that is and will continue to be incredibly unpopular with the American people?”
To answer that question, we need to ask another one. “What powers does a president have in a time of war, and how might he use those powers?” And the answers to these questions are developing in real time. Check out this early morning post on Truth Social for example:
So as the coverage continues, and corporate media delights in all the clicks and views they get when a president kills people, we need to prepare for the fight both overseas and right here at home. There is no scenario in which Trump does not use this conflict to create some kind of control over domestic elections. This is not just a possibility. It is a certainty. And the same corporate media entities that will normalize this war and insert viable reasons for it (that do not actually exist) into our national discourse will also make the case for whatever false election fraud claims come next.
And if you think he wouldn’t start a full-scale war just to distract us from his criminal actions here at home, know that it is something he has had on his mind for a very long time. Here he is accusing Obama of a similar plot back in 2012 and 2013:
America’s decline into fascism is accelerating. This war is the next step, and it’s a big one. When democracies fall, the descent often begins with smaller attacks on rights and privileges as the wannabe dictator tests his boundaries. And if those boundaries don’t hold, the struggle reaches a tipping point. After that, things move very quickly as rights and freedoms often disappear almost overnight. We woke up today at war with Iran. We could wake up tomorrow without our right to vote. It can and often does happen just that quickly. And once it does, all other rights will topple like so many dominoes.
I don’t know how this will end, but we will all know, likely soon, whether America has enough patriotism left in it to keep our republic intact.
