Today is January 6th, 2025—a date that carries a heavy weight in our nation's history as Congress convenes to certify the electoral votes for the 2024 election.
It’s been exactly four years since that dark chapter in our democracy—the day when Donald Trump, a documented lifelong grifter who has repeatedly disgraced our nation, attempted to violently overthrow a legitimate election. This is the first time in American history that a sitting president has tried to undermine the peaceful transfer of power, a tradition that began with George Washington.
It’s a disgrace that we’ve come to this point. Trump, a tax cheat, a draft dodger, a convicted felon, and a wannabe dictator, has somehow been rewarded with the presidency again. Let’s be clear: this is not what the majority of Americans wanted. In the 2024 election, 66% of voters turned out. The result was, basically, a split decision—half voted for Kamala Harris and half for Trump. The con man squeaked by with a mere 1.7% margin, with fewer votes than he received in the last election. Six million registered Democrats who voted for Biden last time stayed home this time. They should be all be ashamed.
Today, we witnessed the certification of the electoral votes for this traitor. As you can see in the footage, it’s a far cry from the chaos of that fateful day. No bear spray, no zip ties, no nooses—just the stark reality of what happened on January 6, 2021 standing in contrast. That day, Capitol Police were engaged in pitched combat against the very people Trump referred to as “peaceful.”
He said love was in the air, but the reality was a screams of violence, ignorance and hatred. Officers reported 140 injuries, including traumatic brain injuries and crushed spinal discs. Some were stabbed with metal stakes the insurrectionists pulled from the barricades. The physical toll was immense—over 86 Capitol Police and 65 Metropolitan Police reported injuries, with many hospitalized and some suffering long-term effects. And tragically, four officers took their own lives in the months that followed.
What infuriates me even more is how the Fraternal Order of Police turned their back on the very officers who fought valiantly that day and instead endorsed this disgraceful con man. They claimed Trump supports the police, but let’s get real—he and the Republicans support a police state. If you are a patriotic officer who values your oath to the Constitution, they don’t support you.
Moreover, let’s talk about this so-called “defund the police” movement. It’s nothing but fake news, Republican style. Democrats have increased police funding, while the real threat comes from Republicans who attack the FBI and the Justice Department. It’s all part of the gaslighting campaign that they’ve been running against America.
Crime rates have continued to decrease under Democratic leadership, yet Republicans peddle the lie that crime is out of control now. It’s all smoke and mirrors, relying on the ignorance of their supporters and a corporate media that buries the facts in polling of how people “feel” about it.
As we reflect on this anniversary, and prepare for the second administration of this unhinged, self-serving grifter and his party of beaten enablers, we must brace ourselves because Trump has vowed to pardon those who committed these heinous acts. It’s a disgrace and an embarrassment on an international level.
We cannot let the truth be buried.
We must remember that January 6th was not a peaceful protest or a tourist visit; it was a domestic terrorist attack on our democracy. We are the true patriots who will not forget that day or the lessons learned.
Thank you for joining me on this important reflection. Let’s continue to stand for the truth and fight for our democracy. I’ll see you soon.
